Maria Cecilia
Thread and Garbage Bag Vendor
Mixed media on canvas
61 x 91 cm
2024
This vibrant and moving portrait depicts María Cecilia, a displaced peasant woman who found in selling garbage bags and threads at the Usaquén market in Bogotá a way to survive with dignity in the city.
Her deeply expressive face reflects years of wisdom, labor, and resilience. The red woven shawl that envelops her and the traditional hat speak of her roots, while her warm yet steady gaze pierces through the canvas with a blend of strength and tenderness.
The blazing yellow background, created with oil strokes and spontaneous drips, represents the vital energy that radiates from her. Painted in mixed media, the work fuses hyperrealism with pop art to highlight the texture, color, and identity of the woman portrayed.
For a few minutes, María Cecilia became a model in the midst of her working day, and for that reason, this piece is also a tribute: 4% of the value of the work is destined for her, as a symbolic act of recognition of her story and her daily struggle.
